If you were running for office today, you wouldn't even need to argue for a particular kind of free speech in order to be maligned. According to legacy media, free speech itself is now solely a "far right" concept.
I agree with you 100%. I came to Canada in 1967. Shortly thereafter I saw a TV news report that a man In Toronto denied the holocaust had happened, people were protesting for or against it. I just remember looking at the news thinking, he is deluded. We know the holocaust happened no matter what he says. I could make up my own mind. I never thought of denying him the right to voice his opinion. Something has changed and not for the better.
Andrew - great article HOWEVER a Key Piece for me is.... How is it that Budget legislation has restriction of anything in it that is non-finanical and completely unrelated to the finances of the country. And adding insult to injury, this undermines, even breaches, a foundational aspect of a free society. To criminalize an opinion - no matter how odious - is simply wrong minded. As wrong minded as the egregious opinion.
When do Canadians stand up to this highly unethical work-arounds of our legislative process. I actually blame this on Stephen Harper - the 'brilliant' originator of the omnibus bill tactic. Which has been embraced by all the bureaucracies since.

Great objectivity as always from you. Thanks
